Current Roles:

President, Central Labor Council

Biography:
Robert Sutton Jr., a lifelong advocate for workers’ rights, has dedicated over four decades to advancing workplace democracy, improving labor conditions, and championing union values. A resident of Rankin County and a proud family man, Robert has been married to his wife, Veronica, for 44 years, and together they have four children and 17 grandchildren.

Robert’s professional journey began in 1978 at Allis-Chalmers (now Siemens-Energy), where he started as a Snagger in the Machine Shop. Over the years, he held numerous positions within the plant, witnessing its evolution through name changes and ownership transitions. His union career began in earnest in 1989, serving as a Shop Steward and later as a member of the By-laws and Constitution Committee.

In 2001, Robert was elected Vice President of United Auto Workers (UAW) Local 1956, stepping into the role of President in 2002 following his predecessor’s retirement. Now serving his eighth term, he has led the local union through challenging negotiations, securing significant victories for members, including a recent landmark agreement in 2024 that delivered a 23% wage increase, signing bonuses, shorter wage progression times, and improved holiday pay.

In addition to his leadership at UAW Local 1956, Robert serves as the UAW CAP (Community Action Program) President for Mississippi, currently in his fourth term. His contributions extend to organizing efforts, such as the campaign at Nissan, where he worked to help employees achieve workplace dignity and respect.

Robert credits the union’s strength and success to the unwavering support of its membership and the dedicated teams he has worked alongside throughout his career. He is passionate about ensuring that every worker he encounters during orientation joins the union, contributing to a collective movement for better working conditions.

Beyond his professional life, Robert enjoys the great outdoors, with hobbies that include fishing, hunting, and camping. He also has a deep appreciation for music, especially Smooth Jazz and Gospel.

Philosophy:
“My defining moments come from witnessing progress for our members—whether it’s improved wages, benefits, or dignity in the workplace. It’s all made possible by the unity and strength of our membership.”
